The Great African Bangle Culture by James Mellon

For more than 1000 years Africans wore bangles – lots of them. Bronze was their precious metal – not gold or silver. Their bronze bangles were not just for the elite but worn by everyone from Senegal to the Cape. Africans maintained their unique style – chunky and solid. They built up their own sophisticated technology for bronze- casting. In the face of the industrial world, this uniform bangle culture began to decline. It has now almost disappeared. But in this book, the beautiful, meaningful African decorative culture is recorded. And hopeful signs are found that elements of the African bangle culture still live on in the Americas.
